In-line lore: Maxwell’s demon is originally a thought experiment proposed by physicist James Clerk Maxwell in 1867, describing an imaginary (but finite) being capable of sorting fast and slow molecules between two chambers. This seemingly decreases entropy within a closed system without expending energy, thus challenging the Second Law of Thermodynamics—which states that while entropy may decrease locally, the total entropy of a closed system cannot decrease. Debated for decades, it is now widely understood that such a being cannot operate without informational processes (measurement, storage, and erasure) that themselves incur energetic costs, thereby preserving the Second Law.

3D printing can be understood as a futile act of defiance against this law. Unable to violate it, FFF 3D printing operates analogously to Maxwell’s demon sorting molecules: material is driven into thermal disorder within the heated extruder, then meticulously admitted through the nozzle, where it is rapidly cooled and fixed into ordered form. Order is imposed through regulated flow, at the cost of energy (heat) and information (G-code). This embodies the spirit of Maxwell’s demon, the original 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘰𝘱𝘶𝘯𝘬.

Maxwell, who did not himself name the “demon,” described it as: “…a being whose faculties are so sharpened that he can follow every molecule in its course, such a being, whose attributes are still as essentially finite as our own, would be able to do what is at present impossible to us.”
