Initiated in 2021, hyperpress is a programme of research spanning 3D printing, graphic design, and publishing—producing 3D printed books, objects, and texts. The research traces the ontology of print by situating additive manufacturing within the lineage of the printing press, where 3D printed books materialise a counterfactual trajectory.
Through book-making as a site of convergence, hyperpress proposes the volumetric press: a methodology emerging from the cross-pollination of 3D printing (object-making) and graphic design (mark-making). Part of the research was undertaken in the graduate department at the University of the Arts Singapore. hyperpress’s 3D printed books are held in the Singapore Art Museum Design Collection, have been commissioned and exhibited by ArtScience Museum, shown at National Design Centre Singapore, Open M Art Fair China, Ginza Graphic Gallery, and recognised by the Tokyo Type Directors Club.
